The various biological compartments of the Belgian coastal zone of the North Sea were studied since 1971. The synthesis of available data on carbon cycling includes phytoplankton biomass and activities (particulate and dissolved primary production, respiration) , zooplankton biomass and activities (grazing, respiration) and planktonic and benthic microbial heterotrophic activities. These various carbon flux estimates allow the development of an overall budget of carbon cycling. This budget shows the importance of microbial (planktonic and benthic) heterotrophs versus zooplankton in the utilization of primary production. Comparison with literature data suggests that this could be a general feature of coastal, as opposed to open sea ecosystems. |

The method used consists of adding highly radioactive material (40 µCi/l NaH14CO3) to sea water with its natural concentrations of zoo- and phytoplankton, incubating this water in the light, separating zoo- from phytoplankton after 1h or at the most 2h and measuring the radioactivity of both. Under such conditions, the concentration of the tracer in phytoplankton can be simplified as a linear function of time, and that of the zooplankton as a parabolic function of time. This simplification leads to an overestimation of grazing of at most 2-3%. Comparisons with the Coulter Counter method are given and discussed. |

The taxonomic composition, abundance and spatio-temporal distribution of copepods were analysed from monthly zooplankton samples collected in Makupa creek and Mombasa Harbour (Makupa creek was until recently subjected to considerable dumping of domestic and industrial waste). At least 51 copepod species belonging to 38 genera in the families Calanoida (25), Harpacticoida (5), Poecilostomatoida (7) and Cyclopoida (1) were identified. The most common genera were Acartia, Acrocalanus, Corycaeus, Oncaea and Oithona. Copepods bloomed in the wet months of November and April (75 to 158/m3). Abundance was consistently high near the creek mouth and low within the creek enclosure. Copepod diversity (H’) was slightly higher (2.00 to 2.57) during September, November,... |

The Sluice-dock of Ostend, a shallow (1.5 m) marine biotope of 86 ha stays closed during some 6-7 months of the year and is not influenced by the tides. During 24 h cycles the nycthemeral migrations of the zooplankton at 5 depths in a watercolumn of 1 meter were studied in relation to several environmental factors: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and chlorophyll content. The photosynthesis shows a minimum during the night and shows a maximum during the late afternoon, at which time the water-temperature is also maximal. Holo- and meroplanktonic organisms migrate towards the surface around 3-5 o'clock a.m., at which time the chlorophyll content is minimal, hence our hypothesis of nocturnal grazing, this phenomenon perhaps combined with a nocturnal... |

The performance of image analysis in measuring suspended particulate matter concentrations was compared with that of the Coulter counter in different samples including latex spheres, diatoms and natural estuarine waters. The two techniques gave comparable numerical concentrations. Image analysis results also correlated positively with dry weight measurements of estuarine suspended particulate matter samples. The conversion of particle areas measured by image analysis into volumes was addressed by trying to determine the average height of the particles. This was done by plotting volume concentrations from the Coulter counter against area concentrations from image analysis. The resulting linear relationships were found to be significant in homogeneous... |

Although estuarine zooplankters are generally believed to be detritivorous, high clearance rates by the estuarine copepods <i>Eurytemora affinis</i> and <i>Acartia tonsa</i> on natural estuarine microplankton have been reported in the literature. In order to enable detection of possible selectivity for these microplankton organisms over detritus, a method that measures clearance rates on total particulate matter is proposed. Image analysis is used to measure copepod gut contents, and combined with Coulter counter measurements of total particulate matter concentration, allows one to calculate clearance rates on the latter. The first results indicate that, in the Westerschelde estuary (SW Netherlands), both <i>E.... |

The distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton around three sandbanks (Gootebank, Westhinder and Buitenratel sandbank) off the Belgian Coast was investigated in February 1994. The abundance of phytoplankton taxa was significantly different between the sandbanks. Community analysis using TWINSPAN resulted in a clear separation of clusters corresponding to the different sandbanks. The zooplankton community analysis, on the contrary, showed a rather indistinctive division of the sandbank stations. This was due to the omnipresence of three dominant copepod species (<i>Temora longicornis, Pseudocalanus elongatus</i> and <i>Centropages hamatus</i>). When these species were excluded from the analysis, a clearer distinction between the... |
